Overview

This project added a 749 sq ft detached ADU at the rear of a generous lot in Menlo Park, configured as a dedicated home office rather than a rental unit.

The main residence is a substantial 7-bed / 7-bath, ~4,800 sq ft single-family home occupying the front and central portion of the property; the new ADU was placed at the back of the lot with landscaped space between the two buildings, creating a true ‘commute’ between home life and work life without ever leaving the property.

Because this unit is for the owner’s own use rather than rental income, the design philosophy was the inverse of an investment build. Instead of a base finish spec, every material category was upgraded — cabinetry, wall finishes, and beyond — to a level consistent with the quality of the main residence.

FAQs

Does Menlo Park offer pre-approved ADU plans?

Yes. Menlo Park offers a pre-approved ADU plan program: a set of standardized floor plans the city has already vetted against current building codes and planning regulations. Applications using a pre-approved plan are prioritized in review, which shortens the permit timeline.
Our 749 sq ft Menlo Park ADU drew on one of Apex Homes' existing floor plans: a refined design already in our portfolio that directly fit what the homeowner was looking for. Because the layout was ready from day one, the project moved straight into permitting and a fully upgraded finish package, without the time and cost of working through a layout from scratch.

What's the difference between a luxury ADU and a standard ADU?

Both deliver real, comfortable living spaces: same code compliance, same livability, same quality of construction. The difference is what each is optimized for.
Standard ADU — A refined base package designed to deliver a great everyday living experience at the best value. Quartz countertops, Shaker cabinetry, luxury vinyl plank flooring, central HVAC, vinyl windows, recessed lighting — finishes chosen to look clean, hold up well, and keep the build economics in reach for a wide range of homeowners.
Luxury ADU — Same foundation, with upgrades tuned to match a high-end main residence: premium cabinetry, refined wall treatments, higher-end fixtures, designer bath finishes, custom millwork where it matters. Our 749 2B2B in Menlo Park was built this way.

Is a detached ADU a good option for a home office?

For many homeowners, yes. A detached ADU solves problems a converted spare bedroom can't:
- Privacy
- A real boundary between work and home.
- Dedicated infrastructure: its own electrical panel and climate control, sized for office equipment
- Permanent property value
That last point matters. Even built as a home office today, it's a permitted second dwelling — ready for in-laws, returning kids, or rental use later. Our 749 sq ft Menlo Park ADU was built for exactly this: a quiet workspace today, full residential utility on standby for whatever comes next.
